About the Museum
The Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art first opened its doors in 1974. As a "municipal" museum, it is run by the city of Kitakyushu for everyone to enjoy. Its main goal is to collect and show art from both Japan and other parts of the world.
Unique Design and Location
A famous Japanese architect named Arata Isozaki designed the museum. He is known for creating very modern and unusual buildings. The museum looks like two giant, long tubes sticking out from a hilltop. This unique design makes it a work of art itself!
The museum sits on a green hill that is located between three different parts of the city, called Kokura Kita, Tobata, and Yahata Higashi. Because it's on a hill, you can see amazing views of the city and the nearby sea.
What's Inside?
The museum holds a collection of more than 6,000 pieces of art. These include:
- Japanese paintings from different historical periods.
- Art created by artists from the Kitakyushu area.
- Prints and posters from around the world.
Besides its main collection, the museum also hosts special shows, called exhibitions, throughout the year. These exhibitions often feature famous artists or specific themes, so there is always something new to see.
The Sculpture Park
Surrounding the museum is a large, peaceful park. As you walk through the park, you will find many sculptures placed among the trees and grass. This creates an outdoor art gallery where you can enjoy nature and art at the same time.
Museum Branch
There is a smaller version of the museum, called a branch, located in a shopping and entertainment center called Riverwalk Kitakyushu. This makes it easy for more people to see parts of the museum's art collection.
