Klingers is a small community in Michigan, near a beautiful lake called Klinger Lake. It's located in St. Joseph County, which is in the southwest part of the state. Klingers is an unincorporated community, meaning it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Where is Klingers?

This community is found where two roads meet: U.S. Highway 12 and County Road 133 (also known as Klinger Lake Road). You can find its exact spot using these coordinates: 41°47′35″N 85°31′34″W / 41.79306°N 85.52611°W / 41.79306; -85.52611.

Klingers sits right on the border between two areas called Sturgis Township and White Pigeon Township.

Klinger Lake and Nearby Waters

Klinger Lake is very close to the community, located to the northwest. Water from Klinger Lake flows into the Fawn River. This happens through a stream called Sherman Mill Creek. Sherman Mill Creek also collects water from two other lakes nearby: Tamarack Lake and Thompson Lake.

A Look Back at Klingers' History

The community of Klingers started as a train station. It was first called "Douglas" and was part of the Michigan Southern Railroad. Later, this railroad became part of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway.

How the Name Changed

On September 26, 1879, a post office opened here. It was named "Klinger's Lake." Because of this, the train station's name was also changed to Klinger's Lake. The first person in charge of the post office was Erastus P. Moon.

Later, on October 5, 1895, the name was shortened to "Klingers." The post office eventually closed on May 31, 1937.

Who was Peter Klinger?

The lake and the community are named after a person named Peter Klinger. He was one of the first settlers in the area, moving there in 1827. You might see the name of the area written in different ways on old maps, like Klinger, Klingers, or Klinger's Lake. Today, there's also a place called Klinger Lake County Club nearby.
