Knighton Heath Period facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Knighton Heath Period is a special time in British history. It's part of the Bronze Age, a time when people started using bronze to make tools and weapons. This period lasted from about 1400 BC to 1200 BC. A famous archaeologist named Colin Burgess gave it this name. It came after the Bedd Branwen Period and before the Penard Period.

What Happened During This Time?

The Knighton Heath Period marked the end of a rich culture called the Wessex culture. People started using more pottery from the Deverel-Rimbury culture. This pottery was often used for burying people.

Burial Customs

During this time, people mostly buried their dead by cremation. This means they burned the body and then buried the ashes. These burial places were often called cremation cemeteries. Different regions had their own styles of pottery urns for these burials. For example, in East Anglia, they used "Ardleigh urns," and in Cornwall, they used "Trevisker urns."

Bronze Tools and Trade

Making things from bronze was very important. This period saw changes in how bronze tools were made. New ways of working with metal came from other parts of Europe. This meant that people in Britain were trading and sharing ideas with people across the continent. They made new types of bronze tools and ornaments.
