Knoke is a small, unincorporated community located in Calhoun County, Iowa, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Knoke is about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) west-southwest of a town called Pomeroy.
Knoke is special because it sits near the edge of something called the Manson crater. This isn't a crater you can see on the surface today. It's an ancient impact structure, which means it was formed a very long time ago when a large object, like a meteor, crashed into the Earth. Over many years, this crater got completely covered up by layers of dirt, rocks, and sand left behind by glaciers. These layers are called glacial till and outwash. So, while you can't see the crater, Knoke is built on top of this interesting geological feature!
History of Knoke
Knoke was officially planned and laid out in 1901. To "plat" a community means to draw up a map showing its streets, lots, and public areas. The community was named after its founder, William Knoke.
When it was first established, Knoke was very small. In 1902, only 8 people lived there. By 1925, the population had grown a little to 17 people. The community continued to grow, reaching a population of 50 people by 1940.
A welcome sign for Knoke, put up in 2001, stated that its population was 21 people at that time. The sign also humorously advertised that you could reach Knoke by taking the next three exits, which were named "Knoke Main," "Knoke Drive," and "Knoke Road."
