Knowle Hill is a lovely hill located in the beautiful Chew Valley in Somerset, England. It sits right between the charming village of Chew Magna and the large, pretty Chew Valley Lake. It's a great spot to explore!

Amazing Plant Life

Knowle Hill is home to a very special plant called the Wood Small-reed. Its scientific name is Calamagrostis epigejos. This type of grass grows on the south side of the hill's top.

A Giant Plant Clone

What makes this plant so interesting is how it grows. The Wood Small-reed forms a big, round patch about 20 metres (65 feet) wide. You can even see this patch from Bishop Sutton, which is 1.2 kilometres (0.75 miles) away!

Scientists think this huge patch might be one single plant. It has spread out using underground stems called rhizomes. These rhizomes allow the plant to grow new shoots from its roots. It's thought that this giant plant could be as old as 200 years!

Exploring Knowle Hill

Knowle Hill is a great place for outdoor adventures. It is considered "open access land" under a law called the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. This means that people are allowed to walk and explore freely on the hill.

Walking Trails

If you enjoy hiking, Knowle Hill is part of some popular walking routes. It is included in the "Chew Valley Three Peaks walk." It is also on the path of the "Two Rivers Way." These trails offer fantastic views and a chance to enjoy nature.
