Knox Mills is a ghost town located in Price County, Wisconsin, United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, often because the main business or resource ran out. Knox Mills is found on Old Mill Road, close to Knox Creek. It's between the small communities of Brantwood and Spirit.
History of Knox Mills
Knox Mills was started by two brothers, William H. and Samuel G. Knox. They created it as a "company town." This means the town was built mainly to support their lumber business. The company owned most of the homes and stores.
Early Lumber Business
The Knox brothers made a deal with the Wisconsin Central Railroad. This deal allowed them to build a special train track, called a railroad spur. This spur helped them move lumber easily from their mills to other places.
Decline and Changes
Over time, the lumber business started to slow down. Because of this, the railroad spur was removed in 1931. This made it harder to transport goods. Later, in 1975, the local cheese factory also closed down. These events led to fewer people living in Knox Mills, turning it into the ghost town it is today.
