Koichiro Katafuchi (片渕 浩一郎, Katafuchi Koichiro, born April 29, 1975) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He is currently the assistant manager for Sagan Tosu.
Playing Career Highlights
Koichiro Katafuchi was born in Saga Prefecture, Japan, on April 29, 1975. After finishing his studies at Tokai University, he started his professional football journey. In 1998, he joined Sagan Tosu, a club from his home area. At that time, Sagan Tosu was part of the Japan Football League.
In 1999, a new league called J2 League was created, and Sagan Tosu became one of its first teams. Koichiro Katafuchi made history on March 28, 1999. He scored three goals in one game against Consadole Sapporo. This amazing achievement made him the very first player to score a hat-trick in the J2 League.
He became a regular player for Sagan Tosu in 2000. However, in 2001, a right knee injury kept him from playing many matches. In 2002, he moved to another J2 League club, Albirex Niigata. Unfortunately, he could not play much there either. He decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2002 season.
Coaching and Management Roles
After ending his playing career, Koichiro Katafuchi began coaching. In 2003, he joined Albirex Niigata as a coach. He spent many years working with the youth teams, helping young players develop their skills. He coached the youth teams until 2015.
In 2016, he moved up to become a coach for the main team at Albirex Niigata. The team's results were not good that year, and the manager, Tatsuma Yoshida, was replaced in September. Koichiro Katafuchi then stepped in as the new manager. He led the team until the end of the 2016 season, helping them stay in the top league, J1 League.
In 2017, he returned to his role as a coach under a new manager, Fumitake Miura. Again, the team faced difficulties, and Miura was replaced in May. Koichiro Katafuchi took over as a temporary manager, also known as a caretaker manager. He managed the team until a new manager, Wagner Lopes, was hired.
In August 2018, Koichiro Katafuchi became the manager of Albirex Niigata once more, taking over from Masakazu Suzuki. He continued in this role until April 2019, when he was replaced. Today, he works as the assistant manager for Sagan Tosu, the club where he started his professional playing career.
