Becoming an Artist
Konstantin Flavitsky began his art journey at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. There, he studied under the famous Professor Fyodor Bruni. He quickly showed his talent, earning silver medals for his drawings and sketches.
In 1854, he won a small gold medal for his painting The Court of Solomon. He finished his studies in 1855, earning the title of artist. He then received a large gold medal for his work Jacob’s Children Sell His Brother Joseph. This important award allowed him to travel to Italy. He lived and studied there from 1856 to 1862, supported by the Academy.
Famous Paintings and Recognition
Flavitsky returned to Russia in 1862. The next year, he received special recognition from the Academy. This was for his large painting Christian Martyrs in the Colosseum, which he created in Rome.
In 1864, his painting Princess Tarakanova became very famous. It earned him the title of professor at the Academy of Arts. This painting also captured the attention of many art lovers and the public.
Sadly, Konstantin Flavitsky died at the young age of 35. His health was weakened by tuberculosis, a serious lung illness. The cold and damp climate of Saint Petersburg made his condition worse.
The Story Behind Princess Tarakanova
Flavitsky's most famous painting is Princess Tarakanova, in the Peter and Paul Fortress at the Time of the Flood. This artwork tells a dramatic story from Russian history.
The painting is based on a legend about a woman named Yelizaveta Alekseyevna Tarakanova. She claimed to be the daughter of Empress Elizabeth and Aleksey Razumovsky. During the reign of Catherine the Great, she tried to claim the Russian throne. She was arrested and imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg.
The legend says she died in her prison cell during a terrible flood in 1777. Flavitsky's painting shows her suffering and despair. It captures the tragic moment of a young woman facing certain death in a dark, water-filled dungeon.
Flavitsky followed the classical style of painting, similar to his teacher. Even though he didn't create many artworks, his painting Princess Tarakanova remains a powerful and well-known piece of Russian art.
