Kopaitic Island is a small island found in the Duroch Islands, which are part of Antarctica. It is located about 0.6 kilometers (0.3 nautical miles) west of a place called Cape Legoupil. No one lives on Kopaitic Island.

The island was named by the Chilean Antarctic Expedition in 1947. They named it after Lieutenant Boris Kopaitic O'Neill. He was the leader of the Chilean team on Greenwich Island during that same year.

Exploring Kopaitic Island's Surroundings

Kopaitic Island is surrounded by interesting features, including an anchorage, a reef, and another island. These places were also discovered and named by Chilean expeditions.

González Anchorage and Its Rocks

González Anchorage is a safe place for ships to drop anchor. It is located on the west side of Kopaitic Island. The Chilean Antarctic Expedition of 1948 first mapped this area. They named it after Captain Ernesto González Navarrete, who was the commander of their expedition.

There are several rocks in this anchorage. The largest one is called Saavedra Rock. It was named after Lieutenant Colonel Eduardo Saavedra. Another rock, Romero Rock, is about 0.2 kilometers (0.1 nautical miles) west of Saavedra Rock. It was named for Guillermo Romero Gonzalez, an astronomer in the Chilean Army. This rock was first called "Islote Astronomo Romero." Around 1951, its name was shortened to "Islote Romero," and since 1962, it has been known as Romero Rock.

Gutiérrez Reef: A Hidden Hazard

Gutiérrez Reef is a rocky area under the water, located about 0.4 kilometers (0.2 nautical miles) north-northeast of the northern tip of Kopaitic Island. It has about 3.7 meters (2 fathoms) of water over it, meaning it's quite shallow. The second Chilean Antarctic Expedition named this reef in 1948. They named it after a boatswain (a ship's officer) named Gutiérrez.

Gándara Island: A Nearby Neighbor

Gándara Island is another island located very close to Kopaitic Island. It lies immediately southwest of Kopaitic Island.
