Kota Rani (died 1344) was a very important ruler in the history of Kashmir. She was the last queen from the Hindu Lohara dynasty. Kota Rani first ruled as a regent, which means she governed for her young son. Later, she became the queen in her own right. Her reign ended in 1339 when Shah Mir took over. He then became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir.

Life Story of Kota Rani

Kota Rani was the daughter of Ramachandra. Her father was the commander-in-chief for King Suhadeva of the Lohara dynasty in Kashmir. Ramachandra put a man named Rinchan in charge of some areas. Rinchan was from Ladakh and wanted more power.

Rinchan sent his soldiers into the fort, pretending they were merchants. They surprised Ramachandra's men and killed Ramachandra. His family, including Kota Rani, was taken prisoner.

To gain support from the local people, Rinchan made Rawanchandra, Kota Rani's brother, an administrator. Rinchan then married Kota Rani. He also hired Shah Mir, who had recently come to Kashmir, as an important helper in his government. Rinchan later changed his religion to Islam and took the name Sultan Sadruddin. He ruled for three years before he died.

Becoming a Ruler

After Rinchan's death, Kota Rani was chosen to be a regent for Rinchan's young son. This meant she would rule until her son was old enough. Later, older leaders convinced her to marry Udayanadeva. Udayanadeva passed away in 1338.

Kota Rani had two sons. Rinchan's son was looked after by Shah Mir. Udayanadeva's son was taught by a wise man named Bhatta Bhikshana. After Udayanadeva's death, Kota Rani became the queen of Kashmir. She chose Bhatta Bhikshana to be her main minister.

Shah Mir pretended to be sick. When Bhatta Bhikshana visited him, Shah Mir attacked and killed him. According to the historian Jonaraja, Kota Rani passed away shortly after. Her sons also died around this time, and Shah Mir took control of Kashmir.

Kota Rani's Legacy

Kota Rani was known for being very smart and a great leader. She helped protect the city of Srinagar from floods that happened often. She did this by having a special canal built. This canal was named "Kute Kol" after her.

The canal took water from the Jhelum River at the start of the city. It then flowed around the city and rejoined the Jhelum River beyond the city limits. This clever idea helped keep the city safe from rising waters.
