Koyashskoye Salt Lake facts for kids
Koyashskoye or Koyashs'ke is a special salt lake located on the coast of the Kerch Peninsula in Crimea, Ukraine. It's separated from the Black Sea by a narrow strip of land. The lake is about 4 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, and it's only about 1 meter deep. What makes this lake truly amazing is its changing water color, which can be anything from pink to a bright scarlet red!
Why is the Lake Pink?
The incredible color of Koyashskoye Lake comes from tiny, microscopic algae that live in its salty water. These algae produce pigments that turn the water vibrant shades of pink and red, especially when the light hits it just right. It's like nature's own colorful artwork!
Salt Crystals and Scents
When the water in the lake evaporates, it leaves behind a thick layer of salt on the stones and along the shores. This salt often forms beautiful, sparkling crystals. As the salt crystallizes, it's said to release a unique scent, sometimes described as smelling like viola flowers.
A Special Place
Even though Koyashskoye Lake is incredibly beautiful and unique, it's not very well-known to many tourists. However, some local people believe the lake has healing properties, and they value it for its natural benefits. It's a hidden gem of nature!
