K. Appukuttan Nair (1925–2007), better known as Kozhikodan, was a famous writer and film critic from Kerala, India. He was one of the first people to seriously review movies in Malayalam cinema. Over 40 years, he wrote about 2,000 Malayalam films!
Kozhikodan started writing about films in the early 1950s. He wrote for newspapers like Mathrubhumi and Chandrika. Later, he became a regular writer for Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly. He worked with two other writers, Cynic and Nadirsha. Together, they made film criticism a respected type of writing in Malayalam.
Kozhikodan won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Book on Cinema in 1988 for his book Chalathitraswadanam Engane?. He also received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Humour in 2010 for his poetry book Padachonikku Salam. He passed away on January 20, 2007.
Today, there is an award called the Kozhikodan Puraskaram. It is given every year to the best book about cinema in Malayalam. This award honors his memory and contributions.
