The Krewe of Proteus is a famous group that puts on a parade for New Orleans Mardi Gras. It's one of the oldest and most traditional krewes, known for its amazing floats and keeping its parade themes a secret!

A Look Back: How Proteus Started

The Krewe of Proteus is the third oldest parade group, called a "krewe," in New Orleans Mardi Gras. It was started in 1882. The two krewes that are older are the Mistick Krewe of Comus and the Knights of Momus.

The Proteus parade usually travels through the Uptown area. It goes along St. Charles Avenue and finishes on Canal Street. What's really cool is that their parade floats still use parts from the early 1880s!

Proteus was formed because the waiting list to join the Mistick Krewe of Comus was too long. Even younger men from families already in Comus couldn't get into the Knights of Momus. So, the Captain of Comus suggested forming Proteus to give more people a chance to be part of the Mardi Gras fun.

The Krewe of Proteus parade happens on the evening of Lundi Gras. This is the Monday before Mardi Gras Day. They parade just before the Krewe of Orpheus.

The parade starts at Napoleon Avenue and Magazine Street. It then heads north to St. Charles Avenue. From there, it goes east on St. Charles Avenue to Lee Circle. It continues on St. Charles Avenue all the way to Canal Street.

A special part of the Proteus parade is the use of "flambeaux." These are people who carry flaming torches. They light up the parade route, making it look magical at night!
