Kristin Henning is a law professor at the Georgetown University Law Center. She is the Blume Professor of Law and leads the university's Juvenile Justice Clinic. Professor Henning is well-known for her work helping young people in the legal system. She also wrote the book The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth.

Early Life and School

Kristin Henning grew up in North Carolina. In 1992, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University. She studied English and African-American Studies there.

After Duke, she went to Yale Law School. She received her law degree (Juris Doctor) in 1995. Later, in 2002, she earned another advanced law degree (Master of Laws) from Georgetown University Law Center.

Her Work and Career

In 1995, Kristin Henning started her career at the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Clinic at Georgetown University Law Center. She then worked for the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. This service helps people who cannot afford a lawyer.

While there, she helped create a special unit for young people. This unit focused on the unique needs of children in the legal system. She led this Juvenile Unit from 1998 to 2001.

In 2001, Professor Henning returned to the Georgetown University Law Center. She became the Blume Professor of Law. She also became the director of the university's Juvenile Justice Clinic. This clinic helps students learn how to defend young people in court.

In 2013, the National Juvenile Defender Center gave her an award. It was called the Robert E. Shepherd, Jr. Award for Excellence in Juvenile Defense. This award recognized her great work in helping young people.

From 2017 to 2020, she was the Associate Dean for Clinics and Experiential Learning at the Law Center. In 2020, she started a program called Ambassadors for Racial Justice. This program helps lawyers who defend young people learn how to challenge unfairness in the legal system. In 2021, she received the Leadership Prize from the Juvenile Law Center.

On September 28, 2021, Professor Henning released her book. It is titled The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth. The book explores how the legal system treats young Black people.
