Shungyosai Tayu-no-kao
A Kuchisake-onna in a scene from Ehon Sayoshigure by Hayami Shungyōsai, 1801

Kuchisake-onna (口裂け女, 'Slit-Mouthed Woman') is a scary figure from Japanese urban legends and old stories. She is often described as a vengeful spirit, called an onryō in Japan. She covers part of her face with a mask or cloth. She also carries a sharp object, like scissors or a knife.

People usually say she is a tall woman, around 175–180 cm (about 5’7-5’9 ft). She has long, straight black hair, pale skin, and white hands. Many people think she is beautiful, except for a big scar on her mouth.

She is seen as a modern type of yōkai, which are supernatural beings in Japanese folklore.

According to the legend, she approaches people and asks, "Watashi, kirei?" (which means "Am I pretty?"). If someone says "no," she might try to harm them. If they say "yes," she takes off her mask. This reveals a large, scary cut on her mouth, stretching from ear to ear. Then she asks again, "Kore demo?" (meaning "Even with this?"). If the person screams or says "no," she might try to hurt them. Some stories say if you answer "yes" to both questions, she will leave you alone. But other versions say she might still visit your home later to hurt you.

Another trick is to say you are running late. She might bow and apologize, letting you pass. You can also describe her as "average" looking. This might confuse her and give you time to run away. Giving her money or hard candies can also distract her. Especially a type of candy called bekko ame [ja]. You can throw them, and she will stop to pick them up. Saying the word "pomade" three times is another way to make her leave.
