The Kukatja people are an important ethnic and linguistic group. This means they share a common culture and speak their own special language. They are known for their strong connection to their traditional lands and their rich cultural heritage.

Where Do They Live?

The Kukatja people live in the dry, sandy areas of Western Australia. Their homes are mainly in the Tanami Desert and the Great Sandy Desert. These deserts are located in the central part of Western Australia.

Kukatja Lands and Neighbors

Their traditional lands are found south of a town called Halls Creek. Key places within their territory include the areas around Balgo and Lake Gregory.

The Kukatja people share borders with several other Aboriginal groups:

  • To the east, they live near the Pintupi and Ngarti people.
  • To the west, their neighbors are the Yulparitja and Walmatjarri people.
  • To the north, they share land with the Jaru people.

The Kukatja Language

The Kukatja language is a vital part of their identity. It is one of the many unique languages spoken by Aboriginal people across Australia. In 1996, a survey showed that about 580 people spoke the Kukatja language. Learning and speaking their language helps keep their culture and stories alive for future generations.
