Kulm Cross facts for kids

The Kulm Cross (German: Kulmer Kreuz in German; Russian: Кульмcкиӣ кpecт in Russian) was a special award given by the country of Prussia. It looked a lot like the famous Iron Cross award. This cross was created on December 4, 1813, by Frederick William III of Prussia. He made it after an important battle called the battle of Kulm.
This award was not given for a single brave act. Instead, it was given to all soldiers who fought in the Battle of Kulm. Officers wore a silver version of the cross. Other soldiers, like NCOs (who are like team leaders) and regular soldiers, wore a metal one. The Kulm Cross was worn right on their military tunic and did not have a ribbon.
A Russian version of this award was also made. It looked exactly like the Prussian one in size and shape. The only difference was that the Russian cross did not have a date or the king's special symbol. About 12,066 soldiers were chosen to receive this cross. However, only 7,131 soldiers who were still alive in 1816 actually got to receive it.
