Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kulumali were an indigenous Australian people who lived in the state of Queensland. They were one of many Aboriginal groups with a rich history and connection to the land.

Who Were the Kulumali People?

The Kulumali were an Aboriginal group from Australia. Like many other indigenous peoples, they had their own unique culture and traditions. Sadly, not much information has survived about the Kulumali people.

Where Did the Kulumali Live?

The Kulumali people lived in a specific area of Queensland. Experts like Norman Tindale estimated their traditional lands covered about 9,065 square kilometres (3,500 square miles). This area was mainly around the town of Windorah and along Kyabra Creek.

What Do We Know About Their Culture?

Because so little is known, it's hard to say much about the Kulumali's daily life or customs. Researchers in the 1960s, like Gavan Breen, tried to learn more but found very little. However, a nearby group called the Wongkumara people remembered something special. They recalled that the Kulumali shared a new corroboree with them. A corroboree is a traditional Aboriginal dance and ceremony that often includes music, singing, and storytelling. It's a very important part of Aboriginal culture.
