Kuntaur is a town located in the central part of the Gambia. It is an important place for trade and travel. In 2013, about 3,074 people lived here. Kuntaur is also the main town for the Kuntaur Local Government Area. This area is part of the Niani district.
Where is Kuntaur?
Kuntaur is found on the north side of the Gambia River. It is about three kilometers south of Wassu. It is also 13 kilometers north of Janjanbureh. An important road called the North Bank Road passes near Wassu. This is where the famous Wassu stone circles are located.
Historical Sights
The Senegambian stone circles are very old and interesting. They are close to Kuntaur. These stone circles are special to the Serer and are seen as a place of worship.
Economy and Trade
Kuntaur is a key town for business. It is about 248 kilometers from where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. This makes it the last inland port where large commercial ships can travel.
The port is a major hub for peanuts and products made from them. The Gambia Produce Marketing Board has a factory in Kuntaur. This factory processes peanuts and has been open since 1956. It is the biggest employer in the town. Kuntaur has also had a market since 1920. This market has helped the town grow and become more active in trade.
