The Kunzea acuminata is a special kind of flowering plant. It belongs to the myrtle family, called Myrtaceae. This plant is found only in one specific area: the south-west part of Western Australia. It's a shrub, which means it's a woody plant smaller than a tree. It has thin branches, soft, silky leaves, and pretty pink flowers that grow in round clusters.

What the Kunzea Looks Like

The Kunzea acuminata is a shrub that can grow up to 2 m (7 ft) tall. It has a few thin branches. When the branches are young, they are covered with long, soft, silky hairs.

Leaves of the Kunzea

The stalk that holds each leaf is about 1–1.5 mm (0.04–0.06 in) long. The leaf itself is long and narrow, like a spear tip. It measures about 6–7.5 mm (0.2–0.3 in) long and only about 1 mm (0.04 in) wide. The edges of the leaves also have long, silky hairs.

Flowers of the Kunzea

The flowers of the Kunzea acuminata grow in round groups. Each group has about eight to fifteen pink flowers. These flower clusters are found at the ends of the branches. Even after the plant flowers, the branches continue to grow.

Small leaf-like parts called bracts surround the flowers. These bracts are about 6–7 mm (0.2–0.3 in) long. Even smaller bracteoles are about 4–5 mm (0.16–0.20 in) long. The plant has five egg-shaped sepals, which are about 1–1.5 mm (0.04–0.06 in) long and feel silky. There are also five pink petals, each about 1.5–2 mm (0.06–0.08 in) long. Inside each flower, there are about fifty stamens, which are about 4.5 mm (0.2 in) long. This plant usually blooms in September.

Discovery and Naming of the Kunzea

This plant was officially described for the first time in 1996. A scientist named Hellmut Toelken wrote about it. His description was published in a scientific book called Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Garden.

The second part of the plant's name, acuminata, comes from a Latin word. It means "pointed" or "sharpened." This likely refers to the shape of its leaves.

Where the Kunzea Lives

The Kunzea acuminata is only found in a small area. This area is located east of Israelite Bay in Western Australia. It prefers to grow in sandy soil that is found over granite rock.

Protecting the Kunzea

The Western Australian Government's Department of Parks and Wildlife has looked at the Kunzea acuminata. They have classified it as "not threatened." This means that, for now, there are enough of these plants, and they are not in danger of disappearing.
