A Look Back: Kurten's History
Kurten has an interesting past, including a unique law about birds!
The Guinea Fowl Law of 1906
In April 1906, the Kurten City Council made a special rule. It said that people could not sell or give away guinea fowl. These birds originally came from Africa. They became very popular in Central Texas.
However, there were soon too many guinea fowl. They started to cause problems for the people in town. The birds would crowd the streets. They even became aggressive if people got too close. In early April 1906, there were 11 reports of guinea fowl attacks. Because of this, the city council passed a law called the Fowl Redistribution Act.
Annual Fireworks Show
Every year, Kurten celebrates Independence Day with a big fireworks show. This event takes place at the Kurten Community Center. For 13 years, this fireworks show has brought in many people. Crowds come from all over Central Texas to enjoy the display.
