A Look Back: Kurthwood's History
Kurthwood has an interesting past, especially linked to the lumber industry. Before it was called Kurthwood, this area was known as Nona. Nona was a busy place because of its sawmills.
The Lumber Industry's Role
In the early 1900s, the lumber industry was very important here. A sawmill was a factory that cut logs into planks and boards. There was even a Nona Lumber Mill near Leesville. This mill helped the community grow.
The Nona Post Office opened in 1909. It helped people send and receive mail. James A. Grant Sr. was the first Postmaster. The post office closed in 1921.
Around 1920, a man named Joseph H. Kurth built a new lumber mill in Nona. Because of his work, the area was renamed Kurthwood. Joseph H. Kurth also became the Postmaster for the new Kurthwood Post Office. This shows how important the lumber business was to the community's name and growth.
