Kusmi Tea is a well-known brand that sells tea. Its main office is in Paris, France. The company was started by Pavel Kousmichoff in St. Petersburg, Russia, way back in 1867. Later, in 1917, the brand moved to Paris when the Russian Revolution began. Today, a company called Groupe Orientis owns Kusmi Tea.
History of Kusmi Tea
How it Started
The person who founded Kusmi Tea was Pavel Kousmichoff. The company's name, Kusmi, comes from his last name. When he was only 14 years old, Pavel left home. He went to work for a tea seller in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Pavel worked hard with the tea seller for many years. In 1867, when he got married, the tea seller gave him a small tea house. This was the beginning of Kusmi Tea.
Growing the Business
Under Pavel Kousmichoff's leadership, the tea business became very successful. By 1880, it was a favorite among the rich families in Russia. The company kept growing. By 1901, Kusmi Tea had about 10 tea houses.
In 1907, Pavel's son, Vyatcheslav, opened a new shop. This shop was located in London, England, on Queen Victoria Street. When his father passed away in 1908, Vyatcheslav took over the family business.
Moving to Paris
The business continued to do well with Vyatcheslav in charge. By 1917, Kusmi Tea had 51 tea houses. These were spread across most of the big cities in Russia.
However, the Russian Revolution started in 1917. Because of this big change, the Kousmichoff family had to leave Russia. They moved to France and opened a new store in Paris. This store was at 75 Avenue Niel. It served as a tea house for many years. Later, it became a training center for the company's staff. When they moved to Paris, the family changed the brand's name to the shorter "Kusmi Tea."
