The Story of Kusmi Tea

How It All Began

The person who started Kusmi Tea was Pavel Kousmichoff. The company's name comes from his family name. When Pavel was just 14 years old, he left home. He went to work for a tea seller in St. Petersburg, Russia. A tea seller is someone who buys and sells tea.

Pavel worked hard for the tea seller. In 1867, when he got married, the tea seller gave him a small tea shop. This was a place where people could buy and drink tea.

Growing the Business

Pavel Kousmichoff's tea business did very well. It became very popular. By 1880, it was a favorite among the Russian nobility. The nobility were rich and important families in Russia.

By 1901, the company had grown a lot. It had about 10 tea shops. In 1907, Pavel's son, Vyatcheslav, opened a new shop. This shop was in London, England, on Queen Victoria Street.

A New Leader and a Big Move

In 1908, Pavel Kousmichoff passed away. His son, Vyatcheslav, took over the family business. Vyatcheslav continued to make the business grow.

By 1917, the company had 51 tea shops. These shops were in many big cities across Russia. But then, the Russian Revolution started. This was a time of big changes and trouble in Russia.

Because of the revolution, the Kousmichoff family had to leave Russia. They moved to France. They opened a new tea shop in Paris, at 75 Avenue Niel. This shop was open to the public for many years. Later, it became a training center for the company's staff. When they moved to Paris, the family changed the company's name to the shorter "Kusmi Tea."
