The Kuykendall Polygonal Barn was a very special barn built in the early 1900s. It was located near Romney in Hampshire County, West Virginia. This barn was unique because it had 15 sides, making it a "polygonal" barn.

It was the only 15-sided barn ever built in West Virginia. It was also one of only a few like it known to exist in the entire United States. The barn used advanced building ideas for its time. Because of its special design and history, the Kuykendall Polygonal Barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 9, 1985.

History of the Kuykendall Barn

The land where the Kuykendall barn stood has a long history. It was part of a large land grant given way back in 1749. Over many years, the property changed hands several times.

In 1882, the farm became part of the Kuykendall family. It stayed with them until 1966. The main farmhouse on the property is even older than the barn, dating back to the mid-1700s.

Building the Unique Barn

The Kuykendall family built the polygonal barn around 1906. The main builder, or chief carpenter, for this special project was a man named John Clowser. He helped bring the unique 15-sided design to life.

What Happened to the Barn?

Sadly, the Kuykendall Polygonal Barn collapsed during a storm in 2005. This meant the unique structure was lost. There have been talks about restoring it, but those efforts are currently on hold.
