Life and Career
Květa Pacovská was born in Prague, a city in the Czech Republic. She studied art at the School of Applied Arts there. She focused on graphic art, which is about creating designs and images. She also worked on conceptual art and artist books.
For many years, Květa worked as a graphic designer. She took part in more than 50 art shows. In 1961, she started drawing picture books for her own children.
Her artwork is known for using shapes like squares and circles. She also loved to use bright colors, especially red. Květa believed that colors, even black and white, could create strong feelings. She said that putting colors together was like making music. Each color is beautiful alone, but when grouped, they create new harmonies.
The Hans Christian Andersen Award is a very important prize. It is given every two years by the International Board on Books for Young People. This award is the highest honor for writers or illustrators of children's books. Květa Pacovská received the award for illustration in 1992.
