Kwikwetlem First Nation |
The Kwikwetlem First Nation is also known as the Coquitlam Indian Band. They are a group of First Nations people. They are part of the Sto:lo people. They live in the Coquitlam area of British Columbia, Canada.
The Kwikwetlem people traditionally speak a language called hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓. This language is a dialect of Halkomelem. It belongs to the Salishan family of languages. The name Kwikwetlem means "red fish up the river."
The Kwikwetlem First Nation has two main land areas called reserves. One is a small site near the Coquitlam River. This river flows into the Fraser River. The other reserve is much larger and is about 2.5 kilometers north.

The Kwikwetlem are an Indigenous group. They have lived in the Coquitlam area for a very long time. Their traditions and history are deeply connected to the land. They are part of the larger Sto:lo group.
Where Kwikwetlem People Live
About 36% of all Kwikwetlem members live on Coquitlam No. 1. This is one of their reserves. Another 41% live in other parts of Canada. Around 23% of Kwikwetlem members live in the United States.
How the Kwikwetlem Nation is Governed
The Kwikwetlem First Nation is led by an elected council. This council makes decisions for the community. The leaders are chosen by the people.

The current leaders were elected in 2019. Their term runs until 2023.

Kwikwetlem Lands and Territory
Historically, the Kwikwetlem people's territory was quite large. It included the areas around the Coquitlam River and Pitt River. Today, the Kwikwetlem First Nation manages two official Indigenous Reserves.
Coquitlam Indian Reserve No. 1
Coquitlam Indian Reserve No. 1 is the main reserve. Its traditional name is slakəyánc, which means "young sockeye." The Kwikwetlem Nation's offices are here. All members who live on a reserve live on this one. It is located at a very old village site. This reserve is about 2.6 hectares (6.5 acres) in size.
Coquitlem Indian Reserve No. 2
Coquitlam Indian Reserve No. 2 is the second reserve. Its traditional name is setɬamékmən. This means "when the tide is high we go." This reserve is much larger. It is about 82 hectares (200 acres) in size. There are plans to develop a business park on this site.
