Kyp Malone, born on February 27, 1973, is an American musician who plays many instruments. He is best known as a member of the popular band TV on the Radio. He also plays in other bands like Iran, Rain Machine, and Ice Balloons. Besides music, Kyp Malone is also a record producer and an actor.
About Kyp Malone
Kyp Malone grew up in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. Later, he moved to New Jersey for high school and finished in 1991.
His Music Journey
Kyp Malone started his first band called Iran in 2000. He formed it with a filmmaker and musician named Aaron Aites.
He later joined Tunde Adebimpe and David Sitek in the band TV on the Radio. He joined them for their album Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes and has been a key part of the band ever since. For TV on the Radio, Kyp writes songs, sings, and plays different instruments. In his song lyrics, he uses creative words to talk about important topics like fairness and society in a thoughtful way.
Kyp Malone is also a member of the band Ice Balloons. He is part of another group called The Yams Collective. He has worked with many other musicians too. For example, he helped produce the 2009 album Summer Of Fear for Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson.
In 2009, Kyp Malone released his own album under the name Rain Machine. He then went on tour to share his new music. This album was produced by Ian Brennan.
He has also toured and played music with Jolie Holland. Kyp Malone was an important influence and an early supporter of the singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten.
Collaborations and Acting
Kyp Malone has recorded music with the Malian band Tinariwen. This was for their 2011 album called Tassili. They recorded this album in the Algerian desert, close to the border of Libya.
In 2002, Kyp Malone appeared in an independent film from the Bay Area called Scumrock. In 2015, he had a small role in the TV show Broad City. He played a music store clerk in an episode called "The Matrix."
In 2017, Kyp Malone worked with artist Kris Lemsalu. They created a special performance called Going Going for the Performa 17 festival.
He also helped create some of the music for the 2018 documentary film Dreaming of a Vetter World.
In 2021, Kyp Malone acted in the science fiction movie Doors.
Most recently, in 2023, Kyp Malone produced and played synthesizer on Matana Roberts' album Coin Coin Chapter Five: In the Garden.
