The Story Behind the Name

The town of Lídice has a special story about how it got its name. Before October 31, 1943, the town was called Potrero. It was renamed to honor another town named Lidice. This original Lidice was in the Czech Republic.

During World War II, in June 1942, the town of Lidice in the Czech Republic faced a terrible event. It was completely destroyed, and its people suffered greatly. This happened as a punishment for an important event related to the war. The renaming of the Panamanian town to Lídice was a way to remember and honor the people of the original Lidice. It serves as a lasting tribute to their memory.
