How Löwensenf Started

On November 1, 1903, a man named Otto Frenzel started a company. He called it the First Lorraine Vinegar and Mustard Factory. It was in Metz, which was part of the German Empire at that time.

Moving to Düsseldorf

After World War I, in 1920, Metz became part of France again. So, the company moved to Düsseldorf, Germany. It was renamed the New Düsseldorf Mustard Company. In the same year, they introduced their most famous product: Löwensenf Extra. This is a very sharp mustard, similar to Dijon mustard.

Leadership and Growth

Otto Frenzel passed away in 1936. His wife, Frieda Frenzel, took over running the company. Production stopped for a while because of World War II. But in 1948, they started making mustard again. In the mid-1960s, Löwensenf bought two other mustard companies in Düsseldorf. These were called ABB and Radschläger.

Becoming Part of Develey

In 2001, Düsseldorfer Löwensenf GmbH joined with Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH. Develey is a company based in Munich. Develey took over selling Löwensenf products. By the end of 2001, Löwensenf became a part of Develey. They still make mustard in Düsseldorf-Lichtenbroich. On February 17, 2014, the company officially shortened its name. It is now simply Löwensenf GmbH.
