The Story of Löwensenf
The company's journey began on November 1, 1903. A person named Otto Frenzel started it in Metz. Back then, Metz was part of the German Empire. He called his company the First Lorraine Vinegar and Mustard Factory.
After World War I, things changed. Metz and the area around it became part of France again. So, in 1920, the company moved to Düsseldorf. It got a new name: New Düsseldorf Mustard Company.
Also in 1920, Löwensenf created its most famous product. It was a very sharp mustard called Löwensenf Extra. It was made in a style similar to Dijon mustard.
When Otto Frenzel passed away in 1936, his wife, Frieda Frenzel, took over. She managed the company. Production stopped for a while during World War II. But in 1948, they started making mustard again. In the mid-1960s, Löwensenf bought two other mustard makers in Düsseldorf. These were companies named ABB and Radschläger.
In 2001, Düsseldorfer Löwensenf GmbH joined forces with Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH. Develey is a company based in Munich. They started sharing parts of their companies. Develey then took over all the sales for Löwensenf. By the end of 2001, Löwensenf officially became a part of Develey. They still make mustard in Düsseldorf-Lichtenbroich.
On February 17, 2014, the company changed its name slightly. They removed the word Düsseldorf. Now, it is simply known as Löwensenf GmbH.
