Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan is an amazing Indian-American scientist. He is known for his work in applied mathematics, physics, and biology. Currently, he is a special professor at Harvard University.
Professor Mahadevan studies how things are shaped and how they move. He looks at both physical objects and living systems. He focuses on things we can see without a microscope. In 2009, he received a special award called the MacArthur Fellow. This award is given to very talented people.
Learning and Degrees
Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan went to college in India. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. After that, he moved to the United States.
He earned a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Then, he got another master's degree and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1995. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in many fields.
His Work and Discoveries
Professor Mahadevan started his teaching career in 1996. He worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This is a very famous science and engineering school.
In 2000, he became a professor at the University of Cambridge in England. He was the first person from India to be a professor in their math department. This was a big achievement!
Since 2003, he has been teaching at Harvard University. Harvard is one of the oldest and most respected universities in the U.S. From 2016 to 2021, he helped lead the Applied Mathematics department there.
He also helps run Mather House at Harvard. This is a place where about 400 college students live. He does this with his wife, Amala Mahadevan.

Professor Mahadevan has received many important awards for his work. These awards show how much his research is valued.
- 2023: He became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This group honors top thinkers.
- 2016: He was named a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected science group in the UK.
