The History of the LG Twins Baseball Team
The team began in 1982. Back then, it was called MBC Chungyong. It was owned by the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation. In their first year, they played at Dongdaemun Baseball Stadium. Later in 1982, they moved to their current home, Jamsil Baseball Stadium.
The Chungyong team was first led by Baek In-chun. He was both a player and the manager. Baek had played baseball in Japan for 19 seasons. In 1982, at age 38, he was the best hitter in the league. He had a batting average of .412, which was a record. As manager, Baek used a Japanese baseball style called "small ball." This style focuses on getting players on base and moving them around. It uses plays like sacrifice bunts and stolen bases. Even though the team did well in 1982, Baek was let go after the season.
Becoming the LG Twins and Winning Championships
In 1989, the team was bought by the LG Corporation. They changed the team's name to the LG Twins. The very next year, in 1990, the Twins won their first Korean Series title. Guess who was their manager? It was Baek In-chun again! In 1994, they won their second championship. A player named Kim Yong-soo was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in both of these championship series. His jersey number, 41, was later retired to honor him.
After their 2002 Korean Series appearance, the team had a tough time. They did not make it to the playoffs for eleven years. This period is sometimes called their "dark ages." In 2013, they finally made it back to the playoffs. They finished second in the regular season. However, they were eliminated by their rivals, the Doosan Bears.
Recent Success and the 2023 Championship
From 2014 to 2022, the Twins made the playoffs six times. But they could not reach the Korean Series again. Then, in 2023, they had a fantastic season. They won the regular season title, which meant they went straight to the Korean Series. In the finals, the Twins faced the KT Wiz. Led by their captain and Korean Series MVP, Oh Ji-hwan, the Twins won the series 4–1. This victory ended the club's 29-year wait for a championship!
