The L Tower is a very tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is a residential building, which means people live in apartments inside it. A famous architect named Daniel Libeskind designed this unique tower.
Construction of the L Tower began in October 2009. The project faced some delays, including a time when work had to stop due to safety worries about a large crane on top. This crane was a big sight for many people living nearby. Even with these challenges, the L Tower was recognized for its design. In 2017, it won eighth place in the Emporis Skyscraper Award.
Before the L Tower was built, the land was home to the Sony Centre, which was once called the Hummingbird Centre. There were plans to tear down the Sony Centre. However, the CEO of the Hummingbird Centre, Dan Brambilla, worked to save the site. He convinced the city to let the new condo tower be built while keeping the original building.
Who Built the L Tower?
The L Tower was developed by three different building companies. These companies are Cityzen and Castlepoint Numa, both from Toronto. The third developer is Fernbrook Homes, which is based in Concord, Ontario.
Sony Plaza and Public Art
The Sony Plaza is an open area located above the busy intersection of Yonge and Front streets. This public space was designed by a company called Claude Cormier and Associates.
Inside the Sony Plaza, you can find special artwork. A Canadian artist named Harley Valentine created three sculptures for the plaza. These sculptures are called Dream Ballet. They are a tribute to the National Ballet of Canada, which used to perform at this location for 40 years. The three sculptures show ballet dancers in different poses, looking like they are moving.
Awards and Recognition
In 2017, the L Tower received an important award. It was given the eighth spot in the Emporis Skyscraper Award. This award celebrates the best new skyscrapers built around the world.
