La Bréole (pronounced "la breh-ol") was once a small village, known as a "commune," located in southeastern France. It was part of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, an area famous for its beautiful mountains and valleys.
On January 1, 2017, La Bréole joined with another village to create a new, larger commune called Ubaye-Serre-Ponçon. This means La Bréole is no longer a separate commune on its own. However, its history and unique charm are still an important part of the region.

What is a French Commune?
In France, a "commune" is like a local government area, similar to a town or a small district. It's the smallest division of local government in the country. Each commune has its own mayor and local council. These councils make decisions about things like local services and public spaces.
France has thousands of communes, from very large cities to tiny villages. They are important for managing local life and providing services to the people who live there.
Why Communes Merge
Sometimes, smaller communes decide to merge, or combine, with neighboring ones. This often happens to help them work better together. By merging, they can share resources and services more easily. This can include things like schools, roads, or even emergency services.
Merging can also help a region become stronger and more efficient. For La Bréole, joining with another village created the new commune of Ubaye-Serre-Ponçon.
Location and Geography
La Bréole is situated in a scenic part of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. The area is known for its stunning natural beauty, including deep gorges and rolling hills. The village is located at an elevation of about 998 meters (around 3,274 feet) above sea level.
The land in the former commune of La Bréole covers an area of about 39.66 square kilometers (about 15.3 square miles). This makes it a moderately sized area for a village. The landscape varies quite a bit, with elevations ranging from 650 meters (2,133 feet) to 1,590 meters (5,217 feet). This wide range means there are both lower valley areas and higher, more mountainous parts.
Population Over Time
The number of people living in La Bréole changed a bit over the years. Before it merged, the population was counted regularly. Here's a quick look at how many people lived there:
- In 2006, there were 342 people.
- By 2011, the population had grown to 394 people.
- In 2021, after the merger, the population for the area that was La Bréole was recorded as 395 people.
These numbers show that La Bréole was a small but steady community. The population figures help us understand the size and growth of the village before it became part of a larger commune.
