La Coronela facts for kids
La Coronela was a special army group in the city of Barcelona. Its main job was to protect Barcelona during a big fight called the War of the Spanish Succession. This group was mostly made up of skilled craftsmen from the city.
They were led by the Conseller en cap, who was like the main leader of Barcelona's government, called the Consell de Cent. La Coronela was very important in defending Barcelona. They fought against the troops of Philip V of Spain, also known as the Bourbons, from 1710 to 1714. This was especially true after Archduke Charles left for Vienna in 1713, leaving his supporters to defend themselves.
How La Coronela Was Organized
During the Siege of Barcelona (1713–1714), about 4,000 soldiers from La Coronela helped defend the city. They were set up into 6 large groups called battalions. Each battalion had 48 smaller groups called companies. Every company had between 80 and 90 armed people.
