Josep Moragues i Mas facts for kids
Josep Moragues i Mas (born in Sant Hilari Sacalm, 1669 – died in Barcelona, 1715) was a Catalan general. He played an important role during the War of the Spanish Succession. This was a big war in Europe that decided who would be the next king of Spain. Josep Moragues fought on the side of Archduke Charles, who wanted to be the king.
After the city of Barcelona was defeated on 11 September 1714, General Moragues tried to escape. He wanted to sail to Majorca to keep fighting against the new king, Philip V. But he was betrayed by someone and then captured. He was executed on 27 March 1715. As a warning to others who might rebel, his head was displayed publicly for 12 years.
A Catalan Hero
Josep Moragues is seen as a very important national hero in Catalonia. Many people in Catalonia consider him a martyr, someone who died for their beliefs or country.
Remembering Moragues
Just like Rafael Casanova, another important figure from that time, Josep Moragues is honored every year. On 11 September, people gather at monuments dedicated to him. They place flowers and pay their respects. This date is very special because it is the National Day of Catalonia. It remembers the battle fought and lost on that day in 1714, where Moragues and others bravely fought. This day became a national holiday in the 19th century.
