La Encantada is a fancy outdoor shopping mall. It's located in Catalina Foothills, which is near Tucson, Arizona, in the United States. A company called Macerich owns it. This mall first opened in 2003. It was the only place in the Tucson area where you could find many luxury stores.
Mall History and Design
Planning for La Encantada started way back in 1998. The developers, Westcor, wanted to build a successful shopping center like Kierland Commons in Phoenix.
The mall was designed to look like a Spanish hacienda, which is a large estate or ranch house. Building work began in 2002. By 2003, most of the shops, over 80%, had already signed up to be part of the mall.
Opening Day Shops
When the first part of La Encantada opened, it had many popular stores. Some of these included:
- AJ's Fine Foods
- Ann Taylor
- Anthropologie
- Apple Store
- Coach
- Cole Haan
- Crate & Barrel
- Lucky Brand Jeans
- Pottery Barn
Adding More Luxury Stores
Later, a second phase of the mall opened. This made La Encantada the top shopping spot in Tucson. It brought many luxury stores to the area for the first time.
Before this, people in Tucson who wanted to shop at these kinds of stores had to travel. They often went to the Phoenix/Scottsdale area or even out of state. Some of the new luxury stores included:
- BCBG Max Azria
- Brooks Brothers
- Brooks Brothers Country Club
- Louis Vuitton
- Sigrid Olsen
- St. John
- Tiffany & Co
