About the Statue
This special statue was made by Alfred Laliberté (1877–1953). It shows a market gardener from the 1600s. Even though the statue doesn't say her name, it represents Louise Mauger (1598–1690). Laliberté knew a lot about the history of French settlers in Canada.
Who Was Louise Mauger?
Louise Mauger was born in France in 1598. Around 1620, she married Pierre Gadoys. They had three children. Two of their children were born in France, and their last child was born in Quebec City.
In 1648, Louise's husband, Pierre, received the very first piece of land in Montreal. This land was given to him by Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve, who helped found Montreal. Pierre's land was about 40 arpent (a measure of land), which made him the first farmer in Montreal. Louise Mauger passed away on March 18, 1690, and was buried in Montreal.
Where is La Fermière Located?
The monument was finished in 1915. You can find La Fermière in front of the Maisonneuve Market. This market is on Ontario Street and is at the start of Morgan Boulevard.
