La Lima is a city and a special area (called a municipality) in the Cortés region of Honduras. In 2023, about 80,740 people lived there. The people from La Lima are called "limeños."
La Lima is home to the main offices of the Tela Railroad Company. This company is part of Chiquita Brand, which is famous for bananas. The city is split into two parts by the Chamelecon River. The older part, La Lima Vieja, is on the west side. The newer part, La Lima Nueva, is on the east side. For many years, La Lima was part of the larger city of San Pedro Sula.
La Lima became its own municipality in 1982. A group of people worked to make this happen. Fernando Ching Navarro was part of that group. He then became the first mayor of La Lima, serving from 1982 to 1986. Mr. Ching passed away in 2009. His restaurant, "Pollos La Canasta," which he started in 1969, is still open in La Lima Vieja.
La Lima has connections with other countries. The FHIA (Fundación Hondureña de Investigación Agricola) has plant labs there. These labs were once known as "La Quimica." There is also an area called "La Zona Americana" (The American Zone). The Chiquita banana company built this area in the 1950s. It was for their top employees, like managers and engineers, to live in. Today, many people from other countries still live in "the American Zone." The Escuela Internacional La Lima (International School of La Lima) is also located there.
La Lima is sometimes called "Little New York." People used to say that if you were a great dancer, you must be from La Lima. Also, many "limeños" live in New York City, especially in The Bronx and Brooklyn. Most of these people come from an area called "Colonia Sitraterco." Recently, more "limeños" have been moving to Miami. In La Lima, you can walk around the "centro" (downtown) and see many different activities happening.
