La Peñita de Jaltemba, often called La Peñita, is a small beach town in Nayarit, Mexico. As of December 2013, about 20,000 people lived there. It's located on Jaltemba Bay, about 64 kilometers (40 miles) north of Puerto Vallarta, right along Mexico Highway 200.

The area around La Peñita is famous for growing fruits like pineapples, bananas, and mangoes.

Exploring La Peñita

The main street in La Peñita is called "La Avenida." It runs from the highway all the way to the beach. This street has a nice path in the middle with palm trees and benches. You'll find many shops, restaurants, and stores along this street, selling everything from clothes to souvenirs.

Just a couple of blocks from the beach, there's a big, shady town square (plaza). It's a great place to relax.

The Famous Thursday Market

Every Thursday, La Peñita has a huge street market called a tianguis. It stretches for four blocks! You can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, clothes, crafts, and many other cool things there. It's a busy and colorful place to visit.

La Peñita and Rincón de Guayabitos

La Peñita is like the main helper town for the nearby resort of Rincón de Guayabitos. These two towns are very close, separated only by a small river. Rincón de Guayabitos has lots of hotels and tourist spots. La Peñita, on the other hand, offers important services like banks, grocery stores, and even a library and post office.

Getting Around

You can easily travel around La Peñita and nearby towns. At the east end of La Avenida, where it meets Highway 200, you can find shuttle vans called colectivos. In 2014, a ride between towns cost about 9 pesos. These shuttles go from La Colonia, through La Peñita and Rincón de Guayabitos, all the way to Los Ayala. They stop wherever you ask them to.

Taxis are also affordable. In 2015, a taxi from Guayabitos to La Peñita cost about 40 pesos. If you want to go to Puerto Vallarta, buses run regularly, usually every 20-30 minutes.

Community Groups

Two main groups help the community in the Jaltemba Bay area:

  • The Jaltemba Bay Rotary Club - La Peñita
  • Los Amigos de Jaltemba
