La Salve facts for kids
La Salve is a neighborhood in the city of Bilbao, Spain. It's part of the Uribarri district. This area got its special name from an old tradition. Long ago, sailors returning from the sea would first spot the tower of the Basilica of Begoña from this very spot as their ships sailed up the Nervión river.
When they saw the tower, they would begin to pray. They thanked the Virgin Begoña, who is the patron saint of the region, for keeping them safe during their journeys at sea. This prayer was called "La Salve," which means "The Salutation" or "Hail" in Spanish.
Today, the most famous landmark in La Salve is the La Salve Bridge. People also call it the Princes of Spain bridge. It's a special type of bridge called a cable-stayed bridge. It was built in the 1970s to help cars and people get into the city from the north side of the river.
The La Salve Bridge became even more famous when the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was built right underneath it. The bridge's structure actually blends into the museum's design, making them look like one big, amazing piece of art and engineering.
