La Víbora is one of Havana's most interesting and historic neighborhoods. It has a rich past and is home to many people today.
How La Víbora Began
La Víbora started way back in 1689. It was a small town where people would stop to trade horses. This was important for groups of travelers, called caravans, who were journeying between Havana and Güines.
The town quickly grew bigger. By 1698, La Víbora was already appearing on local maps and in historical records. Today, it's a very populated part of Havana, with over 23,000 residents.
Famous Faces from La Víbora
Many well-known people have lived in La Víbora over the years. These include important figures like Antonio Bachiller y Morales, who was a famous writer and scholar. A former president of Cuba, José Miguel Gómez, also called La Víbora home.
Other notable residents include Rafael Trejo, Carlos Enríquez, and Mariano Rodríguez, who were all important in Cuban history and culture. The talented musician Jorge Anckermann and the respected diplomat Raúl Roa also lived here. Finally, writers Manuel Cofiño and Elena Josefina Lozano Wilson were also part of La Víbora's community.
