La Virgen is a special area, or "district," located in the Sarapiquí canton. This canton is part of the Heredia province in Costa Rica, a beautiful country in Central America.

Geography of La Virgen

La Virgen covers a large area of about 513 square kilometers (198 square miles). It is located about 187 meters (613 feet) above sea level.

The southern part of La Virgen has mountains. As you travel north, the land becomes flatter, turning into the wide plains of Sarapiquí.

Where is La Virgen Located?

La Virgen is in the northern part of Costa Rica. It shares borders with several other districts. To the north, it borders Cureña. To the south, it borders Varablanca de Heredia.

To the east, you'll find Puerto Viejo and Horquetas. On its western side, La Virgen borders the Alajuela province.

The main town of La Virgen is about 16.4 kilometers (10 miles) south of Puerto Viejo. It is also about 78.6 kilometers (49 miles) north of San José, which is the capital city of Costa Rica.

The economy of La Virgen is largely based on growing pineapples for export. This means many pineapples grown here are sent to other countries.
