Lachlan Morton grew up in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia. He started his professional cycling career in 2013. He rode for teams like Garmin-Sharp and Jelly Belly–Maxxis.
In 2016, Lachlan had a very successful year. He won stages and overall races at the Tour of the Gila and the Tour of Utah. After these wins, he joined Team Dimension Data in 2017. He also competed in big races like the 2017 Vuelta a España and the 2020 Giro d'Italia.
Ultra-distance Cycling Adventures
Morton loves to take on very long bike rides. These are called ultra-distance cycling events.
- "Thereabouts" Films: In 2014, he rode 2,500 kilometers (about 1,550 miles) from Port Macquarie to Uluru with his brother, Angus Morton. They made a documentary film about this trip called "Thereabouts". In 2015, they released "Thereabouts Reprise" about a 600-mile ride across the Colorado Rockies. They rode with other pro cyclists, Taylor Phinney and Cameron Wurf. In 2017, their third film, "Thereabouts Colombia", showed their cycling adventures in Colombia.
- Record-Breaking Rides: In 2019, Lachlan finished first in the GBDuro. This was a 2,000-kilometer (about 1,240 miles) challenge across the United Kingdom. In May 2020, he set a new record on the Kokopelli's Trail in the United States. He finished the 142-mile trail in just 11 hours and 14 minutes. In September 2020, he won the Badlands race, which is a 700-kilometer (about 435 miles) race across the Iberian Peninsula.
- Recent Achievements: He won the Unbound Gravel race in 2024. In 2023, he rode the Tour Divide trail in 12 days, 12 hours, and 21 minutes. This made him the fastest person ever to complete this famous route.
Everesting Challenge
Lachlan Morton once held the world record for Everesting. This challenge means cycling up and down a hill multiple times until you climb the same height as Mount Everest (8,848 meters or 29,029 feet). He completed this feat in 7 hours, 29 minutes, and 57 seconds on June 20, 2020. Other riders have since beaten his time.
The 2021 Alt Tour
In 2021, Lachlan did something amazing called the "Alt Tour". He rode the entire 2021 Tour de France route, including the parts between stages. He did this without any support, meaning no team cars or helpers. He rode to raise money for World Bicycle Relief.
He started on the same day as the official Tour de France. He rode for 12 hours a day and built up a lead on the professional riders. After riding 5,510 kilometers (about 3,420 miles) in 16 days, he finished in Paris. He arrived about 5 days before the main Tour de France group.
Cycling Around Australia in 2024
In 2024, Lachlan Morton aimed to break the record for cycling around Australia. In October, it was reported that he succeeded! He set a new record of 30 days, 9 hours, and 59 minutes. This was a big improvement on the old record of 37 days, 20 hours, and 45 minutes, set in 2011 by David Alley.
