Lackawanna County Courthouse History
The Lackawanna County Courthouse was built in 1884. It is a large, three-and-a-half-story building made of stone. The style of the building is called Romanesque Revival. This means it looks like old European buildings with strong, grand designs.
In 1896, the courthouse was made even bigger. A third story was added, and the roof was changed to include many unique design elements. The building is about 100 feet wide and 140 feet long. It also has a tall, five-story clock tower that stands out. Later, in 1964, another part of the courthouse was built.
This courthouse was also a very important place in history. It was where the first meeting of the 1902 Anthracite Coal Strike Commission took place. This commission was a group formed to help solve a big strike by coal miners.
John Mitchell Monument Details
The monument honoring John Mitchell was put up in 1924. John Mitchell (1870–1919) was a very important labor leader. He worked hard to improve the lives of coal miners in the United States.
The monument is made of granite, which is a strong type of stone. It has a special carved-out space, called a niche. Inside this niche, there is a bronze statue of John Mitchell himself. This monument helps people remember his important work and dedication to helping workers.
