Lady Alicia Blackwood, a brave nurse and painter.

Lady Alicia Blackwood (born in 1818, died in 1913) was an amazing English painter and nurse. Her father was George Frederick Augustus Lambart, a Viscount (a type of noble title). She was married to Reverend James Stevenson Blackwood.

Helping During the Crimean War

Lady Alicia Blackwood and her husband felt they needed to help during the Crimean War. This war took place from 1853 to 1856. They heard about the very difficult Battle of Inkerman. This made them want to go and offer their help.

Her husband, Dr. Blackwood, became a chaplain for the soldiers. Lady Alicia went with him, along with two young friends. They were all determined to find a way to make a difference.

Meeting Florence Nightingale

In December 1854, Lady Alicia went to meet Florence Nightingale. Miss Nightingale was famous for her nursing work at Scutari. At first, Miss Nightingale was a bit unsure about ladies who offered to help. She had met others who weren't truly ready for the tough work.

Lady Alicia asked Miss Nightingale where she could be most useful. Miss Nightingale looked at her and asked, "Do you mean what you say?" Lady Alicia was a bit surprised but said, "Yes, certainly!"

Miss Nightingale explained that many people had offered help before. But when she suggested real work, they often found excuses. Lady Alicia promised she was serious. She said they came to help in any way they could.

A Special Mission

Because Lady Alicia was so determined, Miss Nightingale gave her a very important job. She told Lady Alicia about two hundred poor women living in the barracks. These were the wives of soldiers. Many of them were in terrible condition, without proper clothes or care.

Miss Nightingale said her main job was with the soldiers. She could not help the women and children. So, she asked Lady Alicia to take care of them. There was money and donated items available. But no one had time to organize and give them out.

Lady Alicia agreed right away. This meant she would create and manage a special hospital. It was for the wives, widows, and children of the soldiers in Scutari.

Improving Lives

Lady Alicia Blackwood worked hard to improve the lives of these families. She saw how difficult their situation was. She described the terrible conditions they lived in. Thanks to her efforts, things began to change for them. She helped them get clothes, food, and medical care.

Lady Alicia wrote about her experiences in a book. It was called A Narrative of Personal Experiences & Impressions during a Residence on the Bosphorus throughout the Crimean War. In her book, she showed great respect for Florence Nightingale. She also shared her own vivid and interesting stories from the war.
