The Battle of Inkerman was a major fight during the Crimean War. It happened on 5 November 1854. In this battle, soldiers from the British and French armies worked together. They fought against the Imperial Russian Army and won.

The British army had 597 soldiers killed and 1,860 were hurt. The French army lost 143 soldiers and 750 were wounded. The Russian army had many more losses, with 10,729 soldiers killed or wounded. This battle was a big blow to the Russian army. After Inkerman, they did not send a large army to fight the British and French again. This battle was followed by the Siege of Sevastopol.

Getting Ready for the Battle

In September 1854, armies from Britain, France, Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire arrived. They landed on the west coast of Crimea. Their main goal was to capture Sevastopol, a Russian naval base.

First, they fought the Russian army in the Battle of Alma and won. After this victory, the allies could have attacked Sevastopol right away. However, the British and French commanders could not agree on the best way to attack.

So, they decided to march around the city instead. They planned to surround Sevastopol and put it under a siege. The allies marched to the southern coast of Crimea. There, they set up a supply port in the city of Balaklava. Before the siege began, the Russian commander moved his troops out of Sevastopol.

On 25 October 1854, a Russian force attacked the British base at Balaklava. The attack did not reach the main base. But the Russians managed to gain a strong position near the British lines. This set the stage for the Battle of Inkerman.
