Lady Frances Brandon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lady Frances Brandon (born July 16, 1517 – died November 20, 1559) was an important figure in English history. She was the daughter of Mary Tudor, Queen of France, who was King Henry VIII's sister, and Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. Frances married Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk. They had three daughters: Lady Jane Grey, Lady Katherine Grey, and Lady Mary Grey. Her eldest daughter, Jane, famously became the Queen of England for just nine days.

Lady Frances Brandon's Life

Frances Brandon spent her childhood with her mother. She was also very close to Catherine of Aragon, who was King Henry VIII's first wife. Because of this, Frances did not support Henry VIII's marriage to Anne Boleyn.

In 1533, Frances married Henry Grey. They had two children who sadly died very young. Later, they had three daughters who survived: Lady Jane Grey (born in 1537), Lady Katherine Grey (born in 1540), and Lady Mary Grey (born in 1545).

In 1554, a few weeks after her daughter Lady Jane Grey and her husband Henry Grey were executed, Frances married again. Her new husband was Adrian Stokes. Many people were surprised by this marriage because Adrian was not from a noble family like Frances. Historians believe Frances was pregnant when they married, as she gave birth about six months later. This child did not survive. Frances later had two more children with Adrian, but sadly, none of these three children lived past their first birthday.

Later Life and Death

Frances Brandon's health began to decline in her later years. She passed away in 1559 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, a very important church in London where many famous people are laid to rest.
