What Makes Lady Grey Tea Special?
Lady Grey tea was created by a tea company called Twinings. They made it in the early 1990s. The tea was named after Mary Elizabeth Grey. She was the wife of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. Earl Grey tea was named after him.
Twinings wanted to make a tea that was not as strong as Earl Grey. Some people in Northern Europe thought Earl Grey tea was too strong. So, Lady Grey tea was made to be a bit lighter.
What's in Lady Grey Tea?
Like Earl Grey, Lady Grey tea has black tea and bergamot essential oil. Bergamot is a type of citrus fruit. Its oil gives the tea a special smell and taste.
But Lady Grey tea has two more things. It also contains lemon peel and orange peel. These extra peels give it a brighter, fruitier taste.
When Was Lady Grey Tea First Sold?
Lady Grey tea first went on sale in Norway in 1994. Two years later, in 1996, it became available in Britain.
Different Kinds of Lady Grey
Sometimes, you might find Lady Grey tea with extra ingredients. Some types of Lady Grey tea also have cornflower petals. These petals add a pretty blue color to the tea.
Why Other Teas Have Different Names
The name "Lady Grey" is a trademark of Twinings. This means that only Twinings can use this name for their tea. Other tea companies cannot call their tea "Lady Grey."
Because of this, other companies use similar names. You might see teas called "Madame Grey" or "Empress Grey." Some are even called "Duchess Grey." These teas are similar to Lady Grey but are made by different companies.
