Who Was Lady Po Nagar?
Lady Po Nagar was a legendary queen who played a big role in the history of the Cham people. The Cham people lived in a kingdom called Champa, which was located in what is now central and southern Vietnam. Many temples and towers were built to honor her.
Her Amazing Journey
The legends say that spirits helped Lady Po Nagar on her incredible journey. She sailed on a piece of sandalwood that drifted across the ocean all the way to China. There, she met and married the Chinese crown prince, who was the son of the Emperor of China. She became the Queen of Champa and had two children with the prince.
The Return to Champa
Even though she was a queen in China, Lady Po Nagar missed her family and wanted to visit them in Champa. The Chinese prince did not want her to leave. But Lady Po Nagar was determined. She threw the sandalwood into the ocean. Then, she and her children magically disappeared from China. They reappeared safely back home in Nha Trang, where her family lived.
When the Chinese prince tried to follow her back to Nha Trang, Lady Po Nagar became very angry. The legend says that she used her power to turn him and his entire fleet of ships into stone. This story shows her strength and her deep connection to her homeland.
